Vu Duc Giang, chairman of the Vietnam textile and clothing association, said on Tuesday that Vietnamese clothing manufacturers will face severe shortages of raw materials since the second quarter of this year due to the impact of the outbreak of new coronavirus on the supply chain.

Textile and garment industry is the third largest source of export revenue in Vietnam after smart phones and electronic products. Vietnam's garment manufacturers rely heavily on raw materials from China. The outbreak will affect the future development of Vietnam's textile and garment industry.

Vu Duc Giang said: "(Vietnam) many enterprises still have enough raw materials before the first quarter, but the second quarter will face severe shortage of raw materials. More than 50% of the clothing industry's raw materials are imported from China, but due to the epidemic, it is difficult for us to import raw materials from China, Japan and South Korea.

Giang said in a telephone interview: "it is not clear how much the new coronavirus will affect Vietnam's clothing output this year, but it is expected that output will be flat in the first quarter, and some garment manufacturers will be forced to cancel or postpone delivery."

Giang added: "at present, we are striving to improve the diversity of raw materials to alleviate the impact of the epidemic, and some companies are stepping up manufacturing masks and medical protective equipment."

On Tuesday, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health said the country confirmed that 16 people infected with the new coronavirus had recovered.

According to the WHO report, as of 27 days, 82294 new cases of global new coronavirus pneumonia were identified (1185 new cases), and 2804 cases (42 new cases) accumulated worldwide, of which 78630 cases (439 cases) were newly diagnosed as coronavirus pneumonia in China, and 2747 cases (29 cases) died. New coronavirus pneumonia in countries and regions outside China has identified 3664 cases (746 new cases) and 57 cases (13 cases).

Vietnam customs data showed that Vietnam's clothing and textile exports increased by 7.8% to $32 billion 850 million last year.

The Ministry of labour in Kampuchea also said shortly that at least four garment processing plants in Kampuchea were likely to suspend production because of the delay in the supply of raw materials imported from China due to the outbreak of the new crown virus.
