The emergence of intelligent express cabinets is closely related to the "last mile" problem that our express industry has always emphasized. It solved the pain points of the parties properly, such as the conflict between the time of the recipient and the delivery time, the time saved by the courier and the frequency of the two delivery, and the residential property avoided the dispute of losing pieces for the residents. The courier company increased the efficiency of the express delivery and avoided the phenomenon of "breaking the warehouse".

Therefore, after nearly ten years of development, the number of intelligent express cabinets in China has increased rapidly. According to the statistics of the State Post Office, as of the end of 2019, the number of intelligent express counters in China reached 406 thousand, representing an increase of about 50% compared with 2018.

During the epidemic, the intelligent express cabinet played an important role in the "contactless distribution service". In April of this year, Ma Junsheng, director of the State Post Office, said that the two level postal administrations of provinces and municipalities should coordinate with local relevant departments to promote the integration of intelligent express boxes (letters box boxes) and public service stations into urban and rural public infrastructure, and speed up the planning and construction. But for intelligent express cabinet companies, although the market potential is huge, the development of the industry in the past ten years has not only failed to make the intelligent express cabinet find a clear profit model, but has exposed the drawbacks of operation.

Among them, China Post capital subscribed 50% of the shares became the largest shareholder of "express delivery".

Financial data show that from 2014 to 2017, the "express delivery" business brought 32 million yuan, 309 million yuan, 224 million yuan and 142 million yuan revenue respectively to Santai holdings. However, in the corresponding years, the net cash flow generated by investment activities caused by a large number of "quick delivery" business is not optimistic. Among them, in 2015 and 2016, the data were -21.16 billion yuan and -11.50 billion yuan respectively. At the same time, the increase in the size of the offline outlets has led to an increase in the depreciation of the whole equipment of the "express delivery" business, thereby dragging down the net profit.

According to financial data, when Santai holdings sold some of the shares from Chengdu to China Post, the target company lost 511 million yuan in 2016. After several years of operation of China Post capital and other parties, China Post Zhi Hui still lost 518 million yuan in 2019.

Interestingly, when it comes to the impact of mail delivery in the acquisition of Feng Chao technology, Santai holding said it would no longer apportion the profits and losses of the postal intelligence delivery company, and the company's profit situation would be significantly improved.

In fact, as the acquirer, Feng Chao technology has not been optimistic in recent years. In 2019, the parent company of Feng Chao technology lost 781 million yuan.

From this, we can see that the intelligent express cabinet is undoubtedly "hot potato" in terms of profitability.

"The domestic intelligent express cabinet market is at an early stage of development policy is not perfect, users are not familiar with, enterprises are not profitable." Yang Daqing, a special researcher of China logistics society, analyzed in twenty-first Century interview with an economic report reporter. First, the current popularity rate of intelligent express in China is insufficient, and it can not afford comprehensive value; two, the utilization rate of intelligent courier counters is not high, and it is impossible to achieve high value realisation, and the extension value is difficult to achieve. Three, the rate of repeated use is insufficient. Intelligent express cabinet users are unstable.

"A group of express cabinets cost forty thousand to fifty thousand, and need to upgrade iteratively, plus community admission fees, utilities and so on. Enterprises are still in the investment phase." Yang Daqing further said that the loss of intelligent express cabinet company is also related to the stage of investment layout of enterprises.

So, at this stage, how can smart express cabinets get revenue? This answer appeared in Santai holding company's plan to sell Chengdu in 2017.

According to the sale plan at that time, the business income of "quick delivery" was mainly composed of three parts, namely, sending part fees, overcharging and advertising charges. Among them, the sending fee is to charge the courier to use the service charge of the cabinet, and the overdue charge is to charge the owner of the item the overdue deposit service fee according to the number of days extended. But the "quick delivery" revenue model for many years shows that the above three incomes can not cover all costs.

Can Feng Chao technology break the ice?

The case of "quick delivery" shows that charging users does not seem to help intelligent express cabinet business to make profits.

"Maybe in the near future, all express companies and Feng Chao will sit together on the negotiating table." A person who declined to be named told the twenty-first Century economic news reporter that a possible way is that Feng Chao technology requires all express companies to pay for their use, but the express company itself will not bear the cost and transfer the pressure to consumers by adjusting the express fee.

It is worth mentioning that Feng Chao technology does not exclude the intention to transform traffic when Feng Xing technology promotes membership services through fees.

Through the mail delivery of the acquisition, Feng Chao technology has gained about 70% market share of the national intelligent express cabinet. "Intelligent express cabinets can be fully converted into traffic entry and consumption grasps, and express cabinet enterprises can achieve better business transformation through precision marketing, community advertising, social service providers and other derivative services, and these business directions need customer data support." Yang Daqing told the twenty-first Century economic news reporter.
