In recent years, the sci-fi films under the name of "StarCraft" are very dull. The predicament of this "naming" actually reflects the dilemma of the content of the film: the essence of human exploration of space is related to the need of human beings to prove themselves and find themselves. This need has been shown by many films from different angles, and in the limited space where the basic narration has been set and can be expressed. We use and dominate very few -- science fiction films that show space exploration gradually fall into the stereotypes, apart from a few of them showing new perspectives or touching emotions (such as Mars rescue, star crossing).

At first glance, the latest StarCraft exploration seems to have nothing but a classic title. Ad Astra is Latin meaning "arriving at the stars". It is also a part of the Latin idiom commonly used by Westerners: Per Aspera Ad Astra, meaning "after suffering, reaching the horizon". The film is criticized by domestic audiences as "tedious and lengthy". If we combine this symbolic title of classical spirit to understand the clue and rhythm of the movie, the audience will probably produce more resonance.

Roy (Brand Pitt) is an eccentric astronaut. His dedication to the cause makes it the best choice for the US space command to deal with thorny issues, but his wife can not stand aloof from him. When the earth is about to be impacted and destroyed by the energy waves in outer space, Roy is sent to Mars to find his father who has been missing for many years (Tom Lee Jones), and to terminate the "Lima project" which is directed to search for extraterrestrial life. This story sounds very much like Coppola's modern apocalypse, the space version. It also looks like Nolan's "star crossing" short edition. However, director James Grey creates an immersive psychological atmosphere and rhythm by focusing on the hearts of the characters, so that we can experience an unusual "space trip". Under the leadership of Roy, what we feel is a contradictory emotion, which is the ambition and hope, self deception and self struggle shown by human beings in exploring space and trying to conquer space. As Roy pointed out in the movie, man is a monster who devours the world; you think that man came to the moon to escape from the earth. "Actually, humans fled to the moon just to copy the drinks stand and commemorative shirts on the earth". The director has shown that in the future of "moon life is not a dream", the moon has been transformed into a crowded place by people, where security stores, stores and express companies can be seen everywhere. It is a reflection of what we are trying to do to explore the moon and try to develop the moon at great cost. Can it really bring about a change in the future of mankind?

The movie admiring the beauty of the earth: "our blue marble has never ceased to surprise me, it is always beautiful." This is the sense of homestead that mankind arises in the vastness of space. It is also the affirmation of the earth and its own life. As a character like "Colonel Kurtz" in modern apocalypse, Roy's father, Mike Brett, is a pioneer and soul figure in the US space exploration field. Through this character, the director shows the spirit of American exploration and reflects on what he has done. After three years of hard work, the crew of Lima thought that the mission of searching for extraterrestrial life failed and wanted to return to earth. Roy's father regarded it as a "rebellion" and started to "insurgently" and killed all the crew members.

The abandonment of humanitarianism for the so-called "higher goals" will only lead to disaster. This is a lesson that human history has repeatedly proved and seemingly forgotten. Roy's father's tragedy is the price paid by man for his own arrogance, and the fuel for such arrogance is not only individual ambition, but also institutional problems. "Star exploration" quietly criticized the manipulation and input of the US space command. Roy and his father were also dragged into this black hole.

In the movie the father and son met in the "Lima", the two actors contributed outstanding performances, and the details were even more sober. Mike Brett, who has been floating alone in the depths of space for 16 years, still shows fragments of his favorite musical films in the capsule. Even if we are at the edge of the solar system, we can not change our hobbies and tendencies. It is the result of human civilization that can bring comfort and companionship. This is undoubtedly the affirmation of human nature. And Roy's father's tragedy is alarming: is it a disaster rather than a blessing when humanity tries to show the intensity and purpose of transcending "human nature"?

The phenomenon of alienation of such people by their goals is occurring every day in modern society. In fact, the director, through Roy's psychological assessment before accepting every task, shows us the connotation of "alienation" in modern pursuit and modern business: the competition and endless exploration in modern society are putting people in the "inhuman" situation, and people can no longer engage in their work in the "natural" state. This slightly exaggerated detail is no longer a sensational nonsense at a time when risks are growing and the whole society is increasingly relying on professional division of labor and increasing emphasis on the importance of "professionalism". Roy said in the last psychological assessment of the film: "I will live and love" undoubtedly represents the director's wish to win the declaration of "autonomy".

Unlike most science fiction films, interstellar exploration has a slow moving rhythm: the slow and undisturbed inner activities of characters, quiet and slow dialogues among characters, slow and floating characters. All these may make the modern audience accustomed to "unthinking" feel "dreary". However, if we want to grasp our destiny, we must be able to "slow down" to see what has happened and where we are going. In this regard, interstellar exploration is a new vision of science fiction.
