Long staple cotton, also known as island cotton, is named for its long fiber. As the fruit nodes at the bottom of long staple cotton are close to the ground, three or four bolls have to be picked by machine, which seriously affects the recovery efficiency of machine picked cotton in Xinjiang and restricts the development of long staple cotton.
This year, the cotton cultivation research team of economic crop Research Institute of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences selected a test field in Aksu city to plant 150 mu new varieties.
This new variety is the result of eight years' research by the Institute of economic crops, Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 2012, in order to overcome the mechanical harvesting problem of long staple cotton, the Institute of economic crops formed a cotton cultivation research team to tackle the key problems. In recent years, relying on the national key R & D Program "cultivation of high-quality machine picked cotton varieties in Northwest China", the research team focused on the key links of new variety selection, supporting mechanical harvesting technology and high-yield and high-efficiency cultivation technology of machine picked long staple cotton, and finally selected the suitable long staple cotton varieties for machine harvesting.
During the trial, the new variety had luxuriant branches and leaves, compact bolls, and the first fruit branch was more than 20 cm above the ground, which met the breeding standard.

According to the on-the-spot inspection by the acceptance experts organized by Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the average number of plants per mu was 12700, the number of bolls per mu was 1867400, and the average boll weight was 3.3 G. The average yield of seed cotton per mu is 522.87 kg after field measurement, field test and conversion approval.

Long staple cotton is the key raw material for spinning high count yarn. It is also the main raw material for high-end yarn dyed fabric, home textile and other top products as well as high-value-added textiles and clothing. Dai Lu, director of the extension station of the Regional Agricultural Technology Extension Center, introduced that the first fruit node of long staple cotton was only about 6 cm from the ground, and the fourth fruit node was not more than 20 cm. Mechanical harvesting caused more than 30% waste, and manual picking also increased costs. The planting area of long staple cotton in the region shrank from 1.8 million mu in the prosperous period to 550000 Mu now, and the output also dropped from 20% of the world's total production to the current 1.5 million mu About 0%.
