Mutations of the new coronavirus have been found in five different mink farms in Northern Denmark, which have infected 12 people. The Danish government has decided to kill 17 million minks across the country to prevent the mutated new coronavirus from infecting humans.

The killing of minks across the country has also made the Danish government controversial. Mogens Jensen, the former Minister of agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark, once admitted that there was no legal basis for killing minks together with healthy minks, and then announced his resignation.

Recently, Denmark announced that it would provide compensation of up to DKR 19 billion (about RMB 20 billion) to mink farmers in the country.

Earlier this week, the Danish legislature agreed to provide compensation, including idle machinery costs and lost revenue up to 2030, the finance ministry said in a statement. With the temporary ban ending next year, farmers can resume mink farming in 2022.

The global fur trade exceeds 22 billion US dollars annually. As the largest mink producer in the world, Denmark's mink export volume in 2019 is about 800 million US dollars. The International Fur Federation (IFF) said mink prices in Asia were up 30% due to concerns about a shortage of Danish fur. Based on its high cultivation standards and first-class mink fur quality, Denmark was once the largest mink exporter of fashion luxury brands.

Although farmers can resume mink farming in 2022, this agreement has not yet completely solved the problems of the Danish mink industry. Nearly four million minks are buried in a military zone in Western Denmark, and the gases produced during decomposition have exposed the bodies buried in sandy soil.

The Danish government said there was no risk of spreading the disease, but local residents pointed out that there were lakes and other water sources less than 200 meters away from the landfill pit, which may pollute drinking water. In December 2020, the Danish Ministry of food and Agriculture said that the government had obtained the support of Parliament to excavate and incinerate all mink carcasses in May 2021.

The Swedish government also said it would ban mink breeding in 2021 to prevent it from transmitting the mutated new coronavirus to humans.

Sweden has found cases of infection in several farms, but the new coronavirus infected by these animals has not yet mutated. "Fortunately, in Sweden, we have not yet found mutations in mink farms," said per bolund, Swedish financial market minister. But considering the fight against the epidemic, our mink industry is still a potential risk. "
