July 1, 2022 is the 101st birthday of the Communist Party of China and the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. 2022 is also the 25th anniversary of the founding of China International Fashion Week, the leading promoter of China's fashion industry. Over the past 25 years, China's economy has undergone earth shaking changes. Chinese fashion has gradually matured and its influence is growing worldwide. "Cultural confidence" and "Chinese Aesthetics" have become a new trend in the fashion industry. As an important part of Chinese fashion, Hong Kong's fashion industry is symbiotic with the mainland's fashion industry, intertwined, influenced and supported each other, Jointly promote the development of China's fashion, together write a magnificent chapter of China's fashion industry.

Under the influence of "Hong Kong Wind"

Early fashion designers in mainland China

The rise of the fashion industry in the mainland is inseparable from the influence of Hong Kong. After the reform and opening up, Hong Kong, the Oriental fashion capital with developed fashion industry, began to invest in garment processing factories in the mainland to drive the rapid development of garment processing industry chain in the mainland.

Zhang Zhaoda, the designer of the first "Golden Summit Award" of Chinese fashion design, recalled his own experience: "Hong Kong compatriots and fellow villagers have introduced garment factories to us for production. We can see a lot of fresh clothing practices and factors, as well as advanced machinery and equipment." Under this influence, Zhang Zhaoda founded his own fashion brand in 1989, and became the first generation pioneer of fashion industry in the mainland.

"Oriental Hollywood" Hong Kong radiates Hong Kong's unique fashion style to the global Chinese world through its film and television works and entertainment stars with international influence. "Rouge button", "Ruan Lingyu", "green snake", "in the mood for love", TVB fashion drama, Zhang Guorong, Anita Mei, Maggie Cheung, Chung Chuhong, Zheng Xiuwen... The classic Hong Kong films and Hong Kong stars have not only become the common memory of several generations, but also affected the fashion aesthetic of several generations.

Influenced by the fashion trend in Hong Kong, many mainland designers have special feelings for "Hong Kong". In 1996, the year before Hong Kong's return to China, designers Guo Pei and Sun Jian jointly held a fashion show called "going into 1997", which made a stir. In 2010, Guo Pei was invited to "Hong Kong Fashion Festival · gorgeous show" and became the final designer of "gorgeous show".

In 2010, Xie Feng was one of the mainland designers who went to "Hong Kong Fashion Festival · gorgeous show" with Guo Pei. Xie Feng was the general manager of a fashion company in Hong Kong in the 1990s, and also a designer of Kenzo brand. He founded JEFEN Giffen in 2000 and became the first Chinese designer to hold a personal brand launch in Paris Fashion Week in 2006.

Since then, every year of the "Hong Kong Fashion Festival · gorgeous show", a mainland designer will be invited to present his latest design series: Wang Peiyi in 2011, Qi Gang in 2012, Zhang Chi in 2013, Masha MA in 2014... All of them were outstanding young designers in China at that time.

Wang Yutao, the designer of China Fashion Design "Golden Summit Award", visited Hong Kong for the first time in 1998 to attend the activities of TDC. He was deeply impressed by the international fashion show forms. After 17 years, Wang Yutao was invited to launch the "Hong Kong Fashion Festival · gorgeous show" in 2015 to exchange fashion between the two places as a top designer in the mainland.

Interview with designers in Hong Kong

Q: what kind of fashion influence did you have in Hong Kong in your early years?

Guo Pei The special status of Hong Kong has become a window for us to understand the world at the beginning of China's reform and opening up. In the early 1990s, as an international city, Hong Kong's active culture and fast-paced urban life made Chinese people feel energetic in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time, Hong Kong's films, music and culture all brought fashion messages and triggered a wave of fashion. It was an era of vigorous development, which allowed us to see the world as well as the future.

Xie Feng Hong Kong has played a great role in China's fashion going out. Hong Kong is an important window for exchanges between China and other countries. Therefore, Hong Kong's role in the development of China's fashion industry is also very crucial. In my opinion, many outstanding Hong Kong fashion designers, as pioneers, have led fashion design from China to the world. On the one hand, their practice has explored the way for more Chinese designers, including me. On the other hand, they have proved that Chinese culture and Chinese fashion from which we have grown are enough to shine on the international fashion stage. As a designer who has worked overseas for many years, the biggest impact of Hong Kong fashion on me is that it makes me feel the culture and identity of Chinese people, and let me firmly integrate the Chinese culture into my design and join the team to promote the strength of Chinese fashion.

Wang Yutao First of all, the cultural conflicts in Hong Kong, the freedom of design ideas, the understanding of color, the use of simple lines in graphic design, and the blending of eastern and Western cultures have a great influence on me in my school days; Secondly, I visited Hong Kong for the first time in 1998 and participated in the activities of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. I have never forgotten the show, the walking posture of models, the overall modeling and matching of costumes and hair, and live music.

Qi Gang: From the 1980s to the 1990s, Hong Kong's film and television works had a great influence. By watching Hong Kong's fashion, we could understand the international fashion trend. At that time, there was no fashion information. Therefore, the clothing of Hong Kong film, TV and song stars played a great role in my design, and I began to understand the works of famous fashion designers in Hong Kong. I went to Hong Kong for the first time in 1999. I thought everything was very fashionable, including clothes, make-up, hair styles, fashion brand shops, famous shopping malls, night markets... At that time, I went to zhenshuibu to look for fabric in stock. Ha ha.

Relaxation: Hong Kong's movies, music, shopping environment and food have brought me a lot of fashion inspiration. When I was studying in the UK, one of my best friends came from Hong Kong. He inspired me a lot about my design career. After all, it was at the beginning of 2000. We knew little about fashion brands in the mainland. I didn't know about them when I arrived in the UK. It was my Hong Kong friend who brought me to know some fashion brands and thus had a stronger interest in fashion. At that time, the Hong Kong luxury show released my latest men's wear design. At that time, I was very fond of Gothic dark aesthetics. From the beginning to the end, I used highly mechanized electronic music as the ambient sound. I still remember discussing with the show director how to show models and how to make curtain calls together. At that time, I invited my TVB actor good friend Liang Liewei to give me the finale, He was wearing a black and gold suit. In retrospect, it was a meaningful fashion show.

In 2000, the 150 year old Hong Kong Lane Crawford entered the mainland market for the first time, giving mainland designers a new understanding of fashion business model. In 2007, Lane Crawford opened in Beijing's financial street. For the first time, it copied the "buyer's" department store model in Beijing, bringing more than 600 kinds of international designer brand works.

I.T., Joyce and I.T. from Hong Kong have gradually entered the mainland and become the "treasure land" in the eyes of fashion people. Under this atmosphere, mainland fashion designers and fashion practitioners born in the post-80s and 90s can more directly touch the international fashion trend products, and the "buyer's shop" and "designer brand integrated store" modes have also begun to appear in the mainland.

In 2010, "Mint glutinous rice and onion", the first collection store of original designers in mainland China, opened in Beijing, which indicates that the new generation of Chinese fashion designers also have their own format space, and also indicates that Chinese original fashion design has entered a golden age of vigorous development. Nowadays, all kinds of large and small fashion buyer's shops and designer brand integrated stores have sprung up everywhere in China's cities.
