IBGE Retail Sales Shrank For Two Consecutive Months Compared With Brazil

Brazil's retail sales fell 1.4% month on month in June, the second consecutive month on month contraction, according to data released by Brazil's National Geographic Statistics Bureau (IBGE) on the 10th.

Data show that in June, seven of the eight surveyed retail sales in Brazil showed a month on month decline. Among them, Fabric, apparel and footwear sales fell the most, down 5.4% month on month. Sales of books, newspapers, magazines and stationery decreased by 3.8%, sales of computer and communication equipment and office supplies decreased by 1.7%, sales of other personal and household goods decreased by 1.3%, sales of fuel and lubricating oil decreased by 1.1%, sales of furniture and household appliances decreased by 0.7%, and sales of supermarkets and food decreased by 0.5%. The only sector with growth was pharmaceuticals, medical and perfume products, with sales up 1.3% month on month.

Retail sales in Brazil fell 0.3% in June from a year earlier. Among them, the sales of furniture and household appliances decreased by 14.7%, while the sales of other personal and household goods decreased by 11.4%.

Regionally, 14 of Brazil's 26 states and one federal district saw year-on-year growth in retail sales in June. Among them, Roraima had the highest increase, with a year-on-year increase of 13.3%. Next was aragos, with a year-on-year increase of 11.4%. Third, Mato Grosso, South, increased by 9.5% year on year.

Data also show that in the first half of this year, retail sales in Brazil increased by 1.4% year-on-year. In the past 12 months, retail sales in Brazil fell 0.9% year-on-year.

Cristiano Santos, a researcher at Brazil's National Geographic Statistics Bureau, said that although retail sales in Brazil's supermarkets fell slightly in June, sales were still 2.3% higher than before the outbreak of the new epidemic in February 2020. The growth of retail sales of drugs is related to the rise of drug prices.
