Professor kyung cheol choi and his team from Korea Institute of Electrical Engineering have made remarkable achievements in ultra-thin light-emitting diodes.

This research was published online by the International Journal of Nanotechnology, Nano Express on December 6. According to the team's prediction, this efficient and durable LED technology will be widely used in wearable displays.

Han developed a new OLED: clothes are thinner than hair

Current wearable displays are generally based on OLED screens. Due to the size limitation of wearable devices, the existing screens cannot achieve good display effects.

In order to solve this problem, kyung team has designed an OLED structure that can be compatible with fibers. Through the method of dip coating on the three-dimensional structure of fibers, the team has successfully designed fiber based OLED light-emitting diodes.

The team also confirmed that the fiber organic diode can withstand 4.3% tensile strain while maintaining 90% current efficiency. Moreover, they can be woven into textiles and knitted garments without causing any problems.

In addition, this technology allows the production of organic diodes on fibers thinner than human hair. It should be noted that all work is carried out at a low temperature of minus 105 degrees.

Professor Choi said: "The existing wearable displays have limitations in applicability due to their low performance. However, this technology can produce high-performance optical fiber organic diodes. This simple, low-cost process has opened up a commercial road for optical fiber wearable displays."
