Recently, researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) used a novel cell printing method.

Design

The aerated clothing can be moved with the heat and sweat of the wearer's body.

The project is called "bioLogic", which integrates moist sensitive microorganism cells into clothing materials and opens or closes the scale details according to the wearer's condition.

According to the world clothing and shoe net, the research results were published in the advanced science magazine recently.

The innovative research project is jointly led by Wen Wang, a former research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and the Department of chemical engineering, and former graduate student Lining Yao.

BioLogic was launched as part of the visible media group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was co worked with 14 researchers from different disciplines.

It is made from a non pathogenic E. coli strain because of its water sensitivity.

E. coli cells are designed to be exposed to different humidity environments, not only to expand and contract, but also to emit light.

"We can combine our cells with genetic tools and introduce other functions into these living cells.

Let's take fluorescence as an example to let people know that you are running in the dark.

In the future, we can also combine genetic engineering with odorant release.

So maybe after going to the gym, the shirt can release peculiar smell.

In order to integrate microbial cells into wearable textiles, researchers used cell printing methods to print Escherichia coli cells on latex sheets.

The "double structure" printing process makes the latex fabric deform under various humidity and heat conditions.

More specifically, when the material is placed on the hot plate, the E.coli cells begin to contract (causing the latex layer to curl); when placed near the steam, the cells start to glow and expand, and the latex material becomes flat.

It is impressive that the researchers said that they printed more than 100 wet / dry cycle tests and found no obvious signs of material deterioration.

According to the world clothing shoes and hats net, the latex plain pattern of cell lining passes through the back of exercise clothing.

Flap size and opening angle are different, which are placed on the body to produce the most areas of heat and sweat.

Interestingly, these areas do not always overlap.

Lining Yao explained: "people may think that heat and sweat are the same, but in fact, no area like the lower spine produces a lot of sweat, but there is not much heat.

We have redesigned the garment with fusion of places that are easy to sweat and generate heat.

When people are exercising, the microbial cells in printed clothing can perceive changes in temperature and humidity and act accordingly.

For testing, wearers are required to exercise on treadmills or bicycles.

Using small sensors on the back of the participants to monitor the changes in heat and humidity, the researchers found that the cell flaps began to open in five minutes.

According to the participants, sensors actually help to clear the body's moisture and effectively reduce the temperature in some areas.

Mr. Wang also tried on the dress himself. He said, "I think I have an air conditioner on my back."

At present, the research team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is developing a kind of breathable running shoes with the same printing material and ventilation function.

For the shoe model, the researchers stitched down the flapped flap between the foot and sole of the wearer.

The idea is to ventilate the soles of the feet, because there will be plenty of sweat and heat.

At present, the commercialization of the garment has not yet been completed.

But the team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is seeking to cooperate with sportswear companies to push its innovative cell printing products.

"This work is an example of using biological knowledge to design new materials and print equipment and realize new functions," said Zhao Xuanhe, co-author of the paper.

"We believe that this new material and equipment will find important applications in the interface between engineering and biological systems."
